Your Choice..Building A Legacy…Every Morning…

Soul of Santa Steps Into Something New

When riding in the car to work, it has become somewhat of a tradition. Sacred, in my mind, because it’s one of the only times in my day that I feel heard. Shoot, it’s probably one of the only times I get to sit and listen without expectations. My dad-or The Soul of Santa-as you know him- would pick me up, and we would begin the drive to Kansas City. The conversation would range from what behaviors I would expect from confrontation to what new song or melody he or I had come up with or even what new concept to introduce to Kansas City on behalf of The Do Good Foundation. Every morning was and is a melting pot of legacy building and foundation pouring.

The mission of The Do Good Foundation has an attachment to the unique battles of each of the Lott kids in as much as it has been to the communities that we are immersed and committed to uplifting. Each member of our family has been dealt a rare hand, and while many see the smiles, few experience the weight of the mantle that is the driving force behind supporting disabled and disenfranchised communities. When you have a voice, you use it. When you have overcome, much like Harriet, you journey back, however many times it takes, to bring those you can to the place of peace. Your spirit is what guides you. Your power is what provokes you, and your choice-ironically-is what chooses you. It becomes your manifestation.

For over 20 years, I have watched my father create and sojourn. All the while, he and my mother were creating what would become The Do Good Foundation. They did it when they parented us. They did it with each surgery, recovery, seizure, hospital stay, and near-death call. They did it when they educated us on family and the importance of maintaining the connection. They did it when they taught us of the love of God.

On a recent family trip to Jamaica, our driver told us as we drove through the mountains that families often built on one house for generations; that father would begin to build by buying the land and starting the house, and it was tradition for his children and their children to continue to add to it. The conversation was eerily familiar as I recall conversations with my father regarding changing of the guards. The weight of the mantle became real. It became heavy but precious.

This year is the largest Christmas celebration for the Soul of Santa Brand. We have several tree lightings in the Kansas City Metropolitan area, new music, new books, and much more in store for our community. We truly are stepping into something new. The legacy is established, and it is no longer Santa alone. The oil is officially flowing from the head down, and the family is committed to the mission at hand. Doing good is going beyond the Christmas holiday.
