Artist Statement

It is a pleasure and honor to be invited by Vicki Goldston, the publisher, to write a statement and to share my artwork with you.  An interest in art blossomed in grade school, leading me to become an art major in high school.  I then pursued a BFA and MFA in college. One of the most beneficial aspects of being a versatile professional artist is the freedom to express my creativity and overcome the inhibitions that restrain growth, as I am in control of my artistry intertwined with my destiny.

The journey into printmaking came before painting, inspired by early Japanese artisans, including contemporary Asian and South American printmakers. I am highly skilled in lithography and serigraphy, including relief printmaking. For several years, I concentrated on creating black-and-white imagery from linoleum cuts and then

ventured into hand painting the relief prints with watercolor and gouache.

Besides continuing to work in relief throughout the years, I created paintings and was given private and public commission projects. Beginning in 2008, making digital art became my mantra with the fall of the stock market, and with the advent of COVID-19, I upped the ante of producing giclee prints.  Now, I am concentrating on painting, digital prints, and taking on commissions.

Numerous expressive, compassionate, creative artists, including myself, strive to make their mark while relentlessly adhering to their spirit and vision.  My professional journey has been challenging and rewarding but not victorious yet, for I have not reached the pinnacle of my capabilities. It is a pivotal moment in our lives as the clocks are winding backward while progress is being wiped out, obliterated, and denied at the stroke of a pen.

Throughout history, despite the ravages of war and empires crumbling, poignant works of art have survived.  Art ensures and reflects the times through stories, insightful commentary, and envisioning another world. Furthermore, the vitality in people's lives and culture is stimulated by art.

Do not abandon your dreams or relinquish your power.  Now more than ever, all the various arts need support.

Finally, I am sharing a brief synopsis of a few images:

Magical Dreamweaver

The impetus for creating "Magical Dreamweaver" is my love of tapestries from many cultures, from Persian, African, and Asian to Native American. By sixteen years old, I received a petite weaving loom but never pursued weaving beyond high school. At least a loom is included in this imagery to tell a story.

With the clouds in the background, the loom is in a naturalistic setting without contemporary inhibitions, which is why the woman in the foreground, Nirvana, is au natural.  Blessed with the power to communicate telepathically with nature, she orchestrates the butterflies to weave the tapestry, and they do so graciously, fabricating the thread from the basket of flowers. The butterflies also create smaller versions of themselves, designing petite butterflies woven throughout the tapestry. Simultaneously, Nirvana exists in another dimension, dreaming while embracing a rose and a bird.  This peaceful image of utopian harmony, with the orchestrating of the butterflies mastering beauty in motion, manifests an exquisite magical dream state.  It is one of my most substantial and intricate linoleum cut prints, and it took six months to create.

Cyclonic Blue Waves

The Cyclonic BlueWaves is an intriguing and captivating multimedia giclée print with hand painting, included in a suite of five prints. These waves are a metaphor, reflecting the turbulent challenges when transitioning that can overwhelm one's life. I will let you interpret this imagery to imagine your story.

Floating Portals

Floating Portals is a large painting commissioned during the pandemic, with watercolor, gouache, and acrylic.  It is the gateway of beauty, peace, and serenity.  The turquoise lattice apertures allow the viewer to see the floating cumulus clouds. The left and right sides consist of panels of dazzling geometric decorative elements, giving off a jewel-like effect that changes with the light.
