The Rise of Gen Z: A Call for Inclusion in Kenya and Beyond

Due to the emergence of Gen Z, a generation born into a rapidly changing digital landscape, the world has seen a remarkable shift in societal dynamics in recent years. This generation is reshaping the cultural and societal landscape in Kenya and much of Africa and asserting its voice in national governance and public affairs. The rise of Gen Z is characterized by a widespread desire for inclusion, ethical leadership, integrity, accountability, and a focus on the greater good.

A strong understanding of the value of ethical and authentic leadership distinguishes Gen Z. This generation, having grown up in an era of unprecedented access to information, is acutely aware of global challenges and the consequences of leadership decisions for communities. They are inspired by leaders who embody integrity, transparency, and authenticity. For Gen Z, leadership is more than just a position of power; it is a responsibility to act in the best interests of everyone.

Integrity is a pillar of the values that Gen Z holds. Young people in Kenya are becoming increasingly vocal about the importance of leaders who are competent, honest, and morally upright. They reject corruption and hold leaders accountable for their actions. This call to integrity is more than just rhetoric; it is a plea to leaders to embody their values and lead by example. Another distinguishing feature of Gen Z is the demand for accountability.

This generation expects leaders to be transparent about their decision-making processes and accountable for their actions. In today's digital age, where information is readily available, and misinformation spreads quickly, holding leaders accountable is critical. Gen Z amplifies their voices through social media and other digital platforms, ensuring those in power cannot ignore their demands.

Finally, Gen Z's push for inclusion stems from a deep belief in the greater good. They advocate for policies and practices that benefit the entire society rather than just a select few. This generation is motivated by a desire for social justice and equity, and they are working to make society more inclusive and fairer. Gen Z advocates for changes in Kenya and elsewhere that address systemic inequalities and promote social cohesion.

The rise of Gen Z voices is not limited to Kenya; it is a sweeping trend across Africa. Young people in Nigeria, Uganda, and Ghana also demand a seat in national governance. They use technology, creativity, and innovation to challenge established power structures and advocate for more inclusive policies. This continental movement demonstrates the power of young people to shape Africa's future.

Finally, as Gen Z continues to speak out and demand inclusion, current leaders must listen, engage, and collaborate with these young changemakers. The future of African governance depends on harnessing Gen Z's energy and ideas to build a more inclusive and equitable society.
