I was taking my Morehouse Brother across the street to meet my Grandmother. She lived across the street from Mom and Dad. As soon as He and I walked into her house, she looked at him and said, “Eddie Whitlock. You were in my pre-school class at Friendship before your family moved to Los Angeles.”. This all went down over in Gary years ago. My Grandmother knew my boy before I did. But the whole life experience had an underlying thread based on education. My Grandmother, a teacher teaching pre-school over in Gary Indiana mid-1950s and Eddie in her pre-school class. Pursuing our higher education, Eddie and I end up friends at Morehouse in the ’70s and are still friends today. Education. Life revolves around it. Its how we grow, learning something.
Grandmother
Educators all up in my family. Granny, Mom, and Dad were teachers. Great great Granddad, Father Frank Quarles, Founder of Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta gave space to Morehouse when they moved up from Augusta until they found a place of their own. Seeing that women had different needs, some years later the first classes of that which was to become Spelman were held in the basement of his church. That antebellum Woman on all the Spelman literature is my great, great Grandmother. Education is and always has been one of the keys to a more fulfilling life. Especially in my being a member of the wonderfully diverse race of African Americans or Blacks.
Now, none of us has it easy but I do feel that the education that I received and the ability to think critically has served me well throughout life. We learn to apply all that we know and have experienced in this life in a manner focused on our well being, which leads to the well being of others. Education leads to wisdom. It doesn’t guarantee it but it does put one on the road. It is amazing the doors that open before you with a decent education up under your belt. It is also the key to a better society. Some of the current going on’s could not be happening if people were educated. I smile a lot where others get depressed. You need to know something out here, and education is how it happens. Its how you compete and make a place for yourself in this world. Education, Education, Education. Grandma ‘nem said that its something can’t nobody ever take away from you. I probably put that in my own words but you catch my drift.
Teacher
In passing the thirst for education along to the kids, I used to ask them, “What did you learn today that you didn’t know yesterday?” This was about school because I would ask when I got home from work. They took it on as a challenge and were ready to share what they had for me every day. It also set them on a path of learning about life. Getting their life education, that one I could not protect them from. My goodness, life is rough and tumble, but kinda pretty nice. They are OK and doing well.
Education is important, it just is. Academic, Vocational, Spiritual, Financial, all of it. You can’t do well at things you know nothing about. Problems, issues going on? You must educate yourself so you can manage your way through. Support Teachers. They have a hard job. They are nurturing our future every day, under the most difficult of conditions. Education, Education, Education. Not a bad mantra is it?
