Garden Spices asked the question,

"What do you feel about Democracy in America?"

Contributor, Dr. Joyce Brown

Work to be done beyond lip service

The American experiment’s cracks are more pervasive than ever

  • Economic shrinkages

  • Sheer growth in populations. Minority versus majority

  • Birth rates and shifting power dynamics

  • See it in politics. See it in mass incarceration. Removing millions of young people from meaningful participation in civic and familial life has devastating results.

  • Never vote

  • Disqualified for certain jobs

  • Court ordered supervision

  • The sheer loss of talent at a time when baby boomers are retiring and jobs go unfilled

  • Families fractured - Too many horror stories of children unable to form bonds with incarcerated parents.

  • The sheer cost of travel to state and federal facilities, foster care.

Take an active interest in all elections. Know who’s running in your local elections and what policies they are promoting. Boards of Education. Municipal governments. County Boards. They are consequential.

Pay attention to how often your elected officials ENGAGE with you outside of election season. Showing up for an organizational dinner meeting and sitting at the head table is minimal effort. Do they host meetings in your neighborhood? Do they bring significant infrastructure or educational grants to the areas of town where you reside and your children attend school? Demanding more from your elected officials and holding them accountable is real inclusion.

Vote for Kamala Harris. Early voting is ongoing. If you didn’t see/hear her closing speech tonight, go to YouTube or whatever streaming service you prefer.

Compassionate and passionate, uplifting and moving the country forward. Prepared and ready to lead.

Now, go out and vote. Get all your cousins and the rest of your squad to the polls. The US is counting on you!

Democracy is a good idea. Now to implement....

Christine "Liz" Larue

To me, it is interesting that the English left Europe largely because class struggles were sooo great, and the pecking order between the king and everyone else was so fierce the only way thru to have anything was to leave England. Couple that with the brutal tactics of the English ruling class, they practiced genocide and slavery on their own Indigenous Peoples - the Trish and the Scots. It was the English who propagated the practice of "scalping," not Native Americans. They used land battles to steal England's Indigenous Peoples from their own land. The only way the Indigenous and poor folks could survive was by going into cities to work for the wealthy class in factories and as servants or poor shopkeepers etching out a living.

What Europeans then did in the Americas was practice the exact same systems they escaped from Europe for. They almost completely recreated the society they were escaping from in the U.S.! The Democracy they tout is STILL built on the ruling class and severe class struggles for dominance and control. Our Democracy was built on various lies and class struggles (standing close to the wealthy, hoping the money would fall out of their pockets to the common man.) The lies continue, upholding a Democracy built by men and penalizing everyone else. They want you to know to ignore our abilities and that they have a direct line to their God. Meanwhile, everyone else decides that the market doesn't belong to them.
