What a great keyword for this issue to segue into one of my favorite subjects and one that I have been studying for more than 40 years. For those of you who know me, you would guess – Astrology – and you would be right. Most people who are familiar with me know I am a perpetual student – always eager to learn something new and astrology has served me well over all these years because it has dished up something new at almost every turn. If you wish to find a subject that will outlast your curiosity, astrology might just be for you.
Many folks in the United States have a little familiarity with astrology – mostly the sun sign type you read in newspapers and magazines. But this trend hasn’t served astrology well at all – there is a depth to the study that is almost overwhelming and can easily be overlooked and dismissed as shallow due to these columns. For instance, did you know that wood felled at the right time can be made into a fireplace that doesn’t burn when warming the house – Scandinavian natives were aware of this and did just that. Or, here in the Bible Belt where I live and where astrology has been all but banished by religious folks, local farmers still use the moon to decide the best times to plant and harvest. Then there are investors in the stock market – some of them use astrologers and timing to trade and also to determine what sectors of the economy will be favored and which will fall from grace. Or, many years ago that physicians were required to learn about astrology and timing for treating patients. Hospital employees today would probably still be glad to relate their experiences with patients on a full moon.
I could go on and on about the depth and breadth of astrology but there just isn’t enough time or space in this little article to cover it all. What I really wanted to emphasize is best said in the King James version of the Christian Bible – Ecclesiastes 3: To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: 2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; 3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; 7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
If you know or want to learn about astrology, time can be about more than just its passing – it can be a tool to help you navigate the world you live in much more successfully. May it be so for you and yours – Ashay and Amen
