New Directions: Laugh On

Laughter has always been a major part of my life – Praise God!  I had a mother whose laugh was contagious, and I have many fond memories of times growing up in our home when laughter would overcome us, and we laughed until our stomachs hurt and even past the point of remembering why we were laughing in the first place.  Not so much for my father and brother -they would just shake their heads and act as if there was something truly wrong with us – too bad and so sad.  I don’t think they had nearly as much fun as us ever.

Fortunately for me, when I finally got married, it was to a guy much more like my mother than my father in the laughter department.  Terry has a very distinctive laugh and would almost always join in with my mother and me when we got into a laughing jag.  A number of his friends have told me that they always knew he was in the theater when a comedy was playing because of that laugh.  And after 36 years of marriage, his laugh still evokes warm and fuzzy feelings in my heart center.  What a lucky girl am I.

And finally – most of the close friends I have had over the years are laughers too!  What a gift from life – laughter with a friend.

So, while I have had challenges in my life like everyone else, I believe that one of the things that always brought me through was ultimately my ability to laugh at myself.  One of my favorite sayings that was gifted to me in a plaque by one of my pastors is “Blessed are we who can laugh at ourselves for we shall never cease to be amused”.

Laughter has the power to renew and heal – to lighten your burdens and to make the journey far more joyous.  May it be so for you and yours – Ashay and Amen!
