New Directions: A Tribute to my Mom

When I think of the word abundance, I always think of my mom. She grew up in challenging situations – her dad died when she was very young, and her mom cleaned houses to bring home enough to support the family – which, even in those days, was very modest means. But somehow – through adversity and limitation, my mother was always appreciative – grateful for even the smallest act of kindness or gift she received.

I can’t begin to count the number of times she told us how blessed we were. We had a roof over our heads and would always have enough to eat. I can certainly attest to “enough to eat” as I look in the mirror these days; I can honestly say it has been more than enough – but I digress.

When Mother married my dad and had us, kids, our lives were rich with love, adventure, and a very stable home – although their combined income was very modest all of their lives. My dad always insisted on a traveling vacation, and I can remember to this day one of the trips we took to the Black Hills in a Nash Rambler with mom and dad in the front seat and grandma Dunn in the middle of the back seat separating my brother and me so we wouldn’t fight. No air conditioning and pretty cramped quarters, but I still have fond memories and some very faded pics of that trip.

As I entered adulthood, I had the good fortune to be interested in the laws of manifesting and began my studies in traditional psychology in college and non-traditional studies with a great book called “The Magic of Believing” by Claude Bristol. Most of my adult life has been devoted to study and to learn various techniques that help people heal their wounds and manifest what they desire. But as I reflect, that path was set for me by my mother and her innate understanding of the foundation for abundance. Fortunately for me, her words and actions did not fall on deaf ears or blind eyes. My beliefs are pretty similar to my mother’s, although I suspect I am not so saintly. I feel fortunate to have had her teaching me what true abundance was at a very young age, and consequently, my life has been blessed with what is the richest of all things – a heart that is grateful.

So, the formula for abundance is simple though sometimes not easy to sustain – focus on what you want, envision it as if you have already achieved it, and be grateful throughout the entire process. May it be so for you and yours – Ashay and Amen
