Hello Family! I address you all as family because on some level, we are all family, united at least, by just being human. Family is sacred to some, and for others, it doesn’t hold much sway. What does family mean for you?
Usually, the family one is born into comes to mind, and that is how most define it. What if that is not the case; if for one reason or another one’s birth family doesn’t feel like a real family? Those who feel that way may become estranged and feel alienated. Some may be perfectly fine alone and at peace, but others take this void hard and constantly search for something to fill it. Some start to find the others like them, working more towards a chosen family, or maybe a group of people who seem to connect on a deeper level than blood, DNA or especially culture. What an amazing bond it can become!
These “chosen families” can meet and hit it off as if they’ve known each other all their lives. Coming together from different backgrounds and cultures, they celebrate the very differences that separate most of humankind. Those of us who can feel it are ecstatic to feel as if we have a safe belonging to people who understand. These people become an adoptive, or chosen family — a safe haven from all the “normal” of the world. I for one am extremely grateful for all of my families, all of them, and they are different, and in different places, each helping me, as I hope I’m helping them navigate this life journey
Let’s expand this. Let’s think bigger to a global family. Can you see how we are all a family? Can you see a person on the other side of the world who looks completely different as a member of your family? It’s probably really difficult, even for those “enlightened” people who love and accept all. If I watch the “news,” I find it difficult as well, Are people of all countries told that the other countries are bad? It seems that most people just do what they are told by their own country’s media and what those in charge want them to believe.

I recently watched an interview with a North Korean citizen. Always told that Americans are evil, she told the reporter, once talking to him, that he seemed good, unlike what she has always been told. How trustworthy is our own country? We are told to believe that we are the “good guys”. We may perceive this to be true, based on our own programming and our social and cultural conditioning. Yet, to another human being, who has been told the same by their government or media propaganda, sees us as just the opposite. The point is that none of the mass population is safe from this programming. It just all depends on media conditioning, much like the religion one has been indoctrinated into.
How do we shut negative programming out and learn to love all and serve all? How do we come to the point of recognizing we are all one big human family that must take care of each another? I hope for that peace one day. I suppose I’ll start with me.
