As the world makes its way to understanding diversity, it is slowly shifting, changing. Through social media we have the opportunity to document recent history and to timeline our growth. This documentation enables us to chart our course for acting like we ought to — with understanding, respect, and peace.
A fervent participant of Facebook, I ran across an account of one man’s journey of integrating the exclusive neighborhood of Shaker Heights, OH. The experience of Jerry Whiting is important to share because it takes us through the intricacies of the process of changing the world, one story at a time. We are Goin’ In with The Integration of Shaker Heights.
“In the Spring of 1961 my family integrated part of Shaker Heights OH. I was 7 years old. This is my story of being the first Black student at Onaway Elementary School.”

“Cleveland born, raised in Shaker Heights, I now call Seattle home. I learned PostScript from Adobe engineers, applied my newfound knowledge to barcode fonts (don’t ask), and founded Azalea Software on my kitchen table in a classic case of midnight engineering. Believe it or not, I sold Azalea to Miranda June of 2013 and work for her PT now.”
“I’m the proud Dad of three fine young men: 19, 21, and 24 plus my wife Lisa’s two kids. Did I mention our three grandkids? My big fat blended family! I’m a proud 728 Club member. Carmel and Elmer’s oldest son. Some know me as “the old Deadhead”. “
“I do , (blog), JetCityOrange for highly personal reasons. Stories? I gotta million of ’em. (and I’m still making ’em as I go.)”
