Garden Spices readers are familiar with the artistry of Debra Flint Salter. We are in awe of her skills in renovating furniture and creating sculptural art, but this anniversary issue finds another dimension to Salter's talent - painting. I recognize some of the cityscapes and the feelings evoked by illustrations of "back then(s)." Gate open to our new discoveries from Debra Flint Salter. - Victorine
Artist Statement
'We've been in a perpetual cycle of social justice and the lack thereof for decades, and I wanted to express some thoughts I had on canvas with acrylic paint as my medium. Hands clasped together with words that describe historic events (All For One), a man walking amongst the urban renewal in progress and searching for a new community to live (A Change is Gonna Come), a woman looking out of the window, and pondering her recent situation (What To Do), a couple that has finally been granted a seat after a challenge of abuse of civil rights and abolishing segregation of ridership on buses in the south with a protest led by the young Martin Luther King (Front Row Seat). On a lighter note, women conversing on their everyday lives, including some gossiping, while the elder looks from the window and remembers her younger days (Tales From the Stoop).' - Debra Flint-Salter
